Santa Fe Waldorf High SchoolHigh School
(Grades 9-12)

During the high school years, students develop new capacities for thinking and forming independent judgment. The adolescent wishes to understand objectively both the physical universe and human experience. Teachers at the Santa Fe Waldorf School are specialists in their disciplines and mentor students as they observe scientific phenomena, test a mathematical theorem, follow a sequence of historical events or study an epic poem. The student takes the next step independently and thereby discovers the principle that lies behind the phenomenon, identifies threads running through human history or offers insight into a work of art.

The search for ideals is another compelling interest during the years of adolescence. What is justice? What do we mean by truth? What will give my life meaning? Can I make a difference? The question "Why?" is quickly followed by "What if . . .?" Students discover that compassion and objectivity imbue worthwhile ideals. They are eager to express their ideals in practical ways.

Through the performing, fine and practical arts students deepen and transform experience. Every creation bears the stamp of individuality and expresses the student's response to the world. The student uses imagination, cognition, and skill to bring each artistic or practical task to fruition. Experiencing this process repeatedly as an adolescent builds confidence for setting and implementing goals in adult life.
