Waldorf Wolves Varsity Volleyball Team Among the Best in the State

Our Santa Fe Waldorf Wolves girls’ varsity volleyball team captured its second straight District Championship title October 29th, with a victory over rival Evangel Christian Academy at Evangel’s home court in Albuquerque. The 3-2 win over the Eagles—a team of six Seniors versus our starting line-up of four Juniors, one Sophomore, a Freshman and an 8th Grader, handed our Wolves the top ranking in our NM Athletic Association’s District 5B, plus gave our school home court advantage when we meet Evangel again next week for the District 5B Championship Tournament game (Saturday, November 9th at 5pm)—essentially a formality to cement the #1 spot overall in our district. Our Wolves have a guaranteed berth to the NM State Volleyball Championships in November given their regular season District Championship title.

The Wolves’ varsity volleyball team is led by Junior co-captains Cecelia Barnard and Keifer Nace, and supported by Junior starters Alex Chastenet and Brooke Reiche, Sophomore Gabrielle Chastenet, Freshman Sophie Linett and 8th grader Bea Lowe. A talented team of additional 10th and 8th grade Junior Varsity players rounds out the bench. This strong group of JV players ensures our school will remain a volleyball powerhouse in the next few years.

Perhaps most importantly, clenching this year’s District Championship catapults our school into the 4th place position in the entire state! The girls varsity volleyball team is Waldorf’s first-ever Top 5 statewide ranked team, plus the girls hold the #57th spot in the state overall, even when ranked against teams from New Mexico’s largest 5A high schools such as Santa Fe High School. Most impressive, five Waldorf girls’ individual statistics place them firmly among New Mexico’s very best volleyball players. Even before recording the strong stats the girls earned at the Evangel Christian championship game, our players’ prowess puts them in the Top 60. Junior Cecelia Barnard is ranked #2 in the entire state in Aces (unreturnable serves), third in hitting, and 11th statewide for her strong kills, or spikes. Freshman Sophie Linett holds the #3 spot statewide for Aces, and Junior Keifer Nace is ninth for aces and 34th for assists. Junior Alex Chastenet ranks 30th statewide for serving aces and is the school’s leader for blocks at the net, holding the #58 spot statewide, while 8th grader Beatrice Lowe ranks 26th statewide for her service aces.

The Wolves Volleyball team will face tough competition at the State Championships in Albuquerque, but the girls have proven their mettle in phenomenal regular season play under the skilled direction of Head Coach Josie Adams and Assistant Coach Sat Bir Khalsa.

Come out and support these amazing girls Saturday, November 9th, at Christian Life gym at 5:00 pm for the District Tournament championship game.   Go Wolves!
