Basketball Season Ends

The basketball season came to an end at the February break. Both High School teams had great seasons as they matured and gained valuable experience to prepare for next year when they play a full Varsity schedule and compete in District 2A for a chance to get to the State playoffs. The boys finished the season with a 6-11 record, 2-6 against District teams, playing the whole year with 7 players. The girls closed the season with a 12-9 record, 5-5 against District teams, playing the year with 9 girls. The great news for next year is that both teams return with everybody as there are no Seniors on either team.

The Middle School teams finished up their respective seasons by early February. Both teams placed 5th out of 6 teams in the New Mexico School for the Deaf's Chaparral Classic. The girls' team defeated Monte Del Sol for their first victory of the year while the boys clinched a victory over Desert Academy. The girls' team will return next year, except for Ianeta Kimbrell who will move into High School action. The boys team will lose six players next year as they head into High School action, too.

The basketball season's final game was on Saturday, February 16th with the Waldorf All-Stars (faculty and parents) playing combined teams of the Middle and High School boys and girls. The first game with the female All-Stars was an uphill battle from start to finish as the Middle and High School girls crushed the faculty/parent team 47-30. Leading scorers for the All-Stars were: Uli Stuerznickel with 4 and Thomas Baudhuin with 6. For the students, Emma Aders had 11 points, Tanya Kwantao and Ianeta Kimbrell each had 6 and Malika Stuerznickel had 5. In boys' action, the game came down to a Matthew Paulazzo put-back off a missed shot with 0.2 seconds left, which sealed the win for the students 61-60. Leading the way for the students was Casey Andersen's 18 points, followed by Brad Linch with 15. Conrad Fox-Beck had 10 and Matthew Paulazzo added 9. For the male All-Stars, Maclean Barnard's brother Gordon scored 18, Coach Jake Yeager of the High School boys added 9, and Thomas Baudhuin, playing in his second game of the day, had 8.
