Santa Fe Waldorf School Basketball
INTRODUCING THE 2019-2020 BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL COACH
“I am extremely honored and humbled to be stepping into the role as the Varsity Boys basketball head coach for the Wild Wolves. I cannot wait to see what this upcoming season holds for this team. It is a dream come true to get to share my love of this sport with this incredible group of young men from the Santa Fe Waldorf School and Desert Academy.
My journey with the sport of basketball began as a 10 year old playing on a co-ed YMCA team and has brought me now to coaching the sport over 17 years later. During my youth, I played for the Austin Waldorf School in Austin, TX, and played with AAU teams throughout central Texas. I was a 4 year Varsity athlete, and received All-District and All-State acknowledgements each year that I played. I was recruited to play at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, where I played for two years.
My knowledge of the sport and its nuances, my experience playing the sport, and my conduct as the assistant coach of the Wild Wolves this past season are what qualify me for this job. I have a love and passion for the sport that I bring into every practice and every game. As coaching is something new for me, I have surrounded myself with mentors who I hope to learn from as I embark on this coaching journey.
My experience as a high school athlete was essential in determining the trajectory that I would take in life. My love of working collaboratively comes from my experiences playing a team sport, my drive and desire to excel come from battling through overtime to come out with a win, and my willingness to improve and continue to learn come from seeing the hours of extra time in the gym pay off in a game. These experiences and skills are carried on past the end of an athletic career. As I coach, I want to bring that to my team. I want to give them the opportunity to build a collection of tools and a positive and hard working attitude that they will take with them after graduation. I want to help them learn the benefits of being a member of a team.
As their coach, I will ask these young men to work hard, be accountable and be coachable. I do not think specifically about how I will coach “young men”, but more about how I will approach young people who love this sport and who show a desire to improve and learn.
This upcoming season we will have a very young team, which I see as a gift. The Wild Wolves will have no seniors, and only a couple of upperclassmen carrying over from last season. I see this as an opportunity for the younger players to bring the heat and challenge the more seasoned players to continue to improve on their game. We will be focusing on identifying our strengths as a team and building our overall conditioning and athleticism. This is our second year of having the Wild Wolves co-op between the Santa Fe Waldorf School and Desert Academy and I think that we are going to enter this season ready to work and ready to represent our communities both on and off the court.
I am aware that it is unprecedented for a varsity boys basketball program to be led by a female coach. However, I would argue that my gender does not change my knowledge and love of the game or my experience playing it. I look forward to having a positive impact on the lives of these young men as their coach.”
